Don't Forget to Check Google Hot Trends From Time to Time

Google gives, google takes away. As a traffic source I know many people see google as capricious and unreliable. If you rank well and have a site that gets good consistent traffic from them, you are in love with them. If you lose that ranking, odds are you gnash your teeth at their name and wonder what could be if you only ranked well again. If you look around though, google will even tell you what get's traffic. Seriously, over at his Make Money Online Site, Grizz has said several times to look at the top sites for a search result because google tells you what will rank well. Well, it also tells you what the popular searches are. I'm talking about hot trends. I was just recently reminded to take a look at this again. I have spent a good deal of time chasing searches that I see as long term goals that get consistent traffic, sometimes I overlook the fact that if you act quickly there's money to be made exploiting a trend that may last a few days (if that.)

So, last night I did an experiment with windows police pro and green av remove. One of these two I managed to rank #1 for a period of time last night and I'm in the top 10 for both as I write this. In spite of being in the lower half of the top ten, the site hosting these writeups has received about 3x it's normal daily traffic in the last 12 hours. It helps that the site ranks well anyway and so putting up a post is fairly quickly spidered and usually get's a decent search ranking on it's own (without backlinks).

I did however spend some time rewriting and posting similar articles elsewhere which have also been getting a decent amount of traffic over the last twelve hours. Now, I don't aim to chase hot trends all the time. It can be a tiring process. When I started my computer site I chased the breaking news stories for several months. I had dozens of posts a day, lots of traffic, made some money, but it probably wasn't worth the time I put in. At that time I didn't have a way of knowing which breaking news items would be the hot topics I just chased all that I thought looked like a good match.

I don't know how much longer I'll get traffic on these searches, but it's good while it lasts and if I've done everything right who knows, I may continue to get a trickle of traffic in the future off these (and related) phrases.

One thing that's interesting to point out is that I'm seeing LOTS of variations on these phrases that are really helping to add to the traffic volume. In many cases they're variations on the how to remove or removal of or removing and then the pest in question. (If you don't know these are rogue security programs that claim to be antivirus or antispyware and in reality create more headaches than solutions.)

Monetization can be Adsense (CPC), CPA or affiliate products on hot trends if you have something that matches. Now, a word of warning - if you just try to get bulk traffic from a hot trend search and have nothing related in your page and are monetizing with adsense you may make a bit to start with and then find yourself steeply smart priced. So, if you want to keep your account long term producing don't try to bait and switch.
